Lajes das Flores is the second municipality of the island. The town has it’s own natural harbor and in the 19th century it was renowned for whale fishing. Thankfully this had been ended in 1981 and a whale museum had been created instead. The new harbor’s facilities make Lajes the most important transshipment harbor of the island.

Besides the old whaling factory, the most imposing building of the town is a church, the Igreja Martiz Nossa Senhora do Rosario with 2 tiled cupolas. Nearby there is a cemetery which was built in the second half of the 18th century by Spanish noblemen.

As for nature attractions, the west of Lajes has the nearly 600m high Morro dos Frades. They say it appears to be a nun and a monk — see it yourself!
